The SP was the top-spec model of the original Supersport generation ever built, and only the Final Edition came later in 1998, and this one is basically all original and in fantastic condition. The only upgrades appear to be the Carbon Fiber Racing Exhausts, and Carbon Fiber Clutch Cover.

ORIGINAL PRESS RELEASE:

The 1997 Ducati 900SS/SP is the sweet spot of the air-cooled, carbureted Supersports—lean, purposeful, and loaded with the right bits. As the last model year for this generation, the SP carries all the refinements Ducati had learned along the way: a taut trellis chassis, fully adjustable suspension, an Öhlins rear shock, and that unmistakable dry-clutch chatter that turns heads before you’ve even thumbed the starter. Add 39mm flatslides and a carbon exhaust and you get the best version of what these bikes were always meant to be: a visceral, analog sport machine that rewards a deliberate hand.

Cold starts ask for a little ritual—choke, a couple of patient blips, and a minute of warm-up—then the flatslides wake up with a clean, instant snap. Off idle the response is direct enough to make you mindful of your right wrist, but once you’re rolling the Desmodue’s midrange is the show. It pulls with a broad, elastic surge from the bottom and surges hardest in the meat of the tach, the kind of shove that makes short shifting feel fast. Intake honk from the flatslides blends with the carbon cans’ deep bark for that classic Ducati soundtrack: throaty at cruise, hard-edged when you open it up, never obnoxious if you keep it measured.

Steering is light and honest. The front end talks to you through the clip-ons, and the chassis settles into a corner with that slightly nose-down, committed stance these bikes are known for. It prefers smooth inputs—trail the brake in, pick a line, gently feed in throttle—and the bike rewards you with real mechanical grip and a planted feel mid-corner. The fully adjustable suspenders give you room to tailor the ride for your weight and roads; set correctly, the SP feels taut without being punishing on imperfect pavement. Brakes are period Brembos with strong initial bite and plenty of feel—more than up to the task for spirited backroad work when paired with fresh pads and lines.

Ergonomics are classic 90s sport: a forward lean with low-ish clip-ons and a reasonable seat-to-peg drop. At around-town speeds it asks more of your wrists than a modern upright, but once the wind picks up it comes into its element. The fairing throws clean air at your chest, the engine loafs happily a gear tall, and the whole package settles into a rhythm that makes two-lane miles melt away. It’s not about peak horsepower; it’s about texture—sound, feel, and timing—delivered in a way modern ride-by-wire bikes rarely replicate.
