Earth X batteries are designed to be a drop-in replacement of a
standard 12 volt lead-acid battery, so no special or expensive
charger is required.  Our batteries will work with any vehicle
charging system and “modern” lead-acid battery chargers,
thanks to the built-in battery management system.  And they
are an exceptional value given the fact they last years longer
than a lead-acid battery.

There is a lot of talk about lithium batteries these days, but not
all lithium batteries are equal.  There are dozens of different
types of chemistry used in lithium batteries.   These batteries
use cells made of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry
that was developed in the U.S.A.  This chemistry is the highest
performance and safest on the market today.

Lithium batteries are fundamentally different than lead-acid
batteries.  The lithium cells inside the 12V battery need
electronics to monitor and balance the voltage/charge of the
individual cells.  Other companies sell a balancing charger,
which you have to plug-in periodically to "top off" and balance
the cells.  Inside every one of our batteries is a microprocessor
Battery Management System (BMS) that monitors the charge
level of each cell and balances the charge when needed,
protecting the cells from overcharge or over-discharge. What
this means for you is more starting power, longer battery life,
and the safest lithium motorsport battery on the market.  

All types of lithium batteries (not just these) require a “BMS”
that monitors and balances the cell charge.

protection in addition to over charge protection, short circuit
protection and cell charge balancing!
Other Facts About Lithium Batteries

Lithium batteries voltage remains relatively constant while
discharging, while voltage for a lead-acid battery decreases.
A lithium battery can use 100% of its storage capability
(measured as Amp-Hour, Ah), while a lead-acid battery
typically only uses 30%. Lithium battery’s cranking power will
not drop-off, and it will crank your engine longer. But when
the lithium battery runs out of power it does so abruptly. Just
like your lithium powered hand tools.  LiFePO4 cells by the
nature of their chemistry are 3.3 volt. 12V lithium batteries,
like our motorsport batteries, are created by using 4 cells in
series (technically it is a 13.2 volt battery). The lithium cells
(in series) in a 12V battery pack diverge in both levels of
charge and capacity with each charge/discharge cycle. This
condition reduces the performance of the battery (reduces
capacity) and can lead to overcharging or over discharging a
cell. A cell is permanently damaged if over charged or over
discharged just one time. In the case of overcharging, cells
can rupture, and the entire battery will need to be replaced.
Inside every one of these batteries is a microprocessor
Battery Management System (BMS) that monitors the charge
level of each cell and balances the charge when needed,
protecting the cells from overcharge or over discharge.

Battery Charging

Unlike lead-acid batteries, you don’t need to trickle charge
these batteries during the off season. We recommend that
you do NOT trickle or float charge them. No maintenance is
required.

In the event you have to charge the battery, use any
“modern” lead-acid battery charger or 13.2V Lithium battery
charger. By “modern” we mean a charger that was built in
the last 10 years that automatically turns off when the battery
is fully charged (based on volts). Also, be sure the charger’s
voltage level does not exceed 15V. If the charger does not
display the voltage reading, then use a voltmeter to check
the voltage while charging.

The OptiMate recharges and balances cells within the battery
efficiently and safely so it can be used with lithium batteries that do
not have the built in balancing circuitry, such as Shorai and Ballistic

OptiMate lithium 0.8A’s maintenance program delivers current to the
vehicle circuitry, protecting and keeping the battery at 100% charge.
  1. Pre-qualification test: OptiMate Lithium displays the condition of the battery before charging and measures
    environment temperature. The ampmatic™ charge program is selected according to temperature and battery
    condition.
  2. Low Volts recovery: The safeTº protection mode controls charging during this sensitive battery SAVE stage, to
    ensure that an over discharged battery will be correctly and safely recovered. Tests are conducted through-out
    the SAVE program to determine if the battery has successfully recovered and can advance to BULK CHARGE.
  3. Bulk charge: the ampmatic™ processor actively adjusts charge current to match battery capacity and
    condition, achieving a complete charge in the shortest time. Progress is tracked against the ideal charge curve
    for LiFePO4 batteries.
  4. Short-circuited / dead cell check: Charge progress is tracked against the ideal LiFePO4 charge curve, internal
    damage will be detected and unnecessary charging is  prevented of a battery that cannot be recovered.
  5. Absorption and equalization: for 10 minutes the current is delivered in pulses with voltage controlled between
    14,0 and 14,3V, aiding cell voltage equalization and improving the battery’s overall power delivery.
  6. Charge verification: the voltage is limited at 13,6V while the ampmaticTM processor monitors the current
    absorbed by the battery. If this reveals a less than optimal charge, the program reverts to absorption for a
    further 10 minutes.
  7. Voltage retention test: is conducted for 30 minutes during which no charge current is delivered, with 5 possible
    test results indicating the battery’s general state  of health. A green (voltage > 12,7V) result extends the test up
    to 12 hours, to check for excessive self discharge or higher than expected power loss through the vehicle’s  
    electrical system.
  8. Charge maintenance: The 12 hour MAINTENANCE CHARGE CYCLE consists of 30 minute float charge periods
    at a voltage of 13,6V followed by and alternating with a 30 minute ‘rest’ (no charge current) periods. During the
    float charge period current is delivered only if the battery has lost charge due to connected vehicle circuitry. A
    refresh cycle may be performed if the charge level has dropped significantly. The voltage retention test and
    maintenance charge cycle will repeat 24 hours after the start of the very first test and continue to repeat for as
    long as the charger remains connected.
  9. The alternating charge and ‘rest’ maintenance program protects the battery against over discharge by
    connected vehicle circuitry, making it ideal for indefinite and 100% safe long term  maintenance charging.
